Home of Kistha Haus German Shepherds and Pembroke Welsh Corgi’s. We are a small kennel, located in the beautiful Lake County in Northern California.
We breed quality DDR German Shepherds. Our adults are from DDR German Pedigree dogs only, no American lines. Our puppies are raised in a home environment and are socialized from day one. They are raised around cats and other dogs and are able to explore and grow to be well socialized family members. Our puppies are suitable for schutzhund, personal protection, search and rescue, police work, and also make great family companions.
Hello Kim, A few days ago I saw you advertising in the pedigree database website and finally I found the way to your home page. Me, I’m also 100% DDR, but I’m human. I was born in East Germany and still I live here, near the Czech border. When I was a young boy I started with GSD breeding together with my parents. We had really good times in the 70’s by doing dog sports and dog breeding. Now, about 30 years after, I’m on the way to come back again to my old and wonderfull hobby. A good friend of mine here in my home town tried permanentely to bring me back into matters of GSD sports. He is the one, being the first owner of Dino and Duke vom Schäferliesel. I know these dogs very well. Now the two males belong to the “Haus Iris” kennel in Apolda not so far from here. When I opened your web site, there was a great welcome by Rookie’s view out of the car. What a nice picture - congratulation. But as well I was shocked a little, cause I looked into the dark brown face of Rookie and I saw Duke, the uncle of Rookie. These two dogs are looking so similar - amazing. Just the eyes of Duke are a little darker. You can be proudy to have got such a nice GSD male with pure DDR pedigree background. Hope, you will continue in these matters and you will have a lot of good times with the German Shepherds from a really rare and outstanding source, that still exist. All the best for you, your family and your dogs, Lutz from Germany
Statement
For my “Come back” in GSD breeding here I decided for the East German line, cause I love the enthusiasm, the will and the straightness of those people, who still want to keep this kind of genotype as a part of German Shepherd population here in Germany. I’d like to support them as good as I can. We speak about a period of 10 generations in GSD breeding (40 years: 1949 - 1989) here in Germany with sharing of the population completely into two parts. Of course there were a few attempts of changing some dogs between East and West. For example some East German males went to the Netherlands and some West German males came here. But their influence on the whole population was rather low. After the political change 1989 and the German reunification the number of East German Shepherd breeders dropped down dramatically as for economical reasons mostly. Many of their East German dogs were sold and went away for ever and so important volumes of genes from that East German kind of a German shepherd dog were lost unfortunately. But thanks to a couple of good and bright breeders these alternative Shepherds still exist here. There are no statistics published by the National Association (SV), but me for my selves I calculate around 2% – max. 4 % of the 18.000 registered GSD puppies that are born yearly here in Germany belong to the East German genotype. For the long-term future I can’t see a good chance to have enough genetic progress within the East German population and to keep them pure. But it will be done and tried as long as it’s possible. So what East German Shepherd breeders will need in the future is the dosed or regulated implementation of some genes from the show line population or from the working line or from Czech to avoid inbreeding depressions and to get variety new - just a touch on a selected part of other bloodlines and then back to the rare East German genotype. If not doing that way, it becomes the status of conservation breeding more and more. The separation of the German shepherd population into 3 parts nowadays is often critically seen among the German breedership. The show line is called “the modern type” and the East German shepherd dogs and the working line dogs are called “antique type” or similar like that. Me personally, professionally coming from cattle breeding industry, I cannot see so many problems in this status of population, quite the contrary. To have 2 – 3 different lines within the population, that kept separately, opens the chance for having alternatives in the future in case of missing genetic progress in one line. It is a special kind of a safety system for keeping the breed in good quality and so I’m more optimistically in that way compared to other members and breeders here in the association. Although there is only one breeding goal for German shepherd breeding, the breeders in East and West sometimes have a different understanding on it. While the West Germans generally give more emphasize on type, the East German’s target is to have workability first of all and to have a good balance between these two main traits: workability and type. East German breeders have more acceptance and respect on sable and solid black dogs and generally they prefer dark colors on their dogs. But this is just generally said. Keeping the breeding goal more open from the administrational side, offers a good chance for breeders to can do selection more individually and creates variety as well within the population. And as long as we have phenotypic variation we surely will have genotypic variation also. And variation is the necessary base for breeders, to can go forward in breeding and selection. Our Shepherds have full DDR pedigrees. They come from hip certified and schutzhund titled parents. Our Shepherds are ALL hip and elbow certified either “good” or “excellent”, DM tested Clear (Degenerative Myelopathy) and CERF clear before being bred. They are not kennel dogs, they are a part of the family! They are are very socialized with other dogs and cats and kids.
We also breed Pembroke Welsh Corgi’s. We have red and white’s and tri colored dogs. Our breeding dogs are screened thru OFA for Hip dysplasia, DM (Degenerative Myelopathy) and CERF. Our Corgi’s make great family companions and are raised in our home, and are well socialized with children. Our Male Winston is one of only 8% of all DM tested Corgis, to test Clear. So we now are striving to wipe DM out of our Corgi’s with a male that can only produce Clear or Carrier, no matter what he is bred to. This means he will not produce puppies that will later develop this crippling disease. DM is Degenerative Myelopathy.
